Collected from the open prairie landscapes of Colorado and Kansas, this Great Plains Gypsum formed from mineral-rich evaporation deposits left behind by the ancient inland seas that once covered much of the central United States. Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral known for its pale translucence and subtle pearly luster, often forming in layered crystalline structures shaped by cycles of water, sediment, and time.
These pieces display soft white to cream-toned crystal surfaces with a quiet glow that catches light through the stone’s natural translucence. Some cuts reveal fibrous crystalline texture, while others show smoother satin-like faces shaped by weathering across the plains. Because gypsum forms delicately and fractures easily, each piece preserves slightly different edges, layering, and internal light diffusion.
Each stone is hand-collected, shaped, stabilized, and sealed to strengthen the mineral while preserving its natural crystalline character and soft reflective quality. The result is a lightweight material that carries both the quietness of prairie geology and the fragile beauty of evaporite crystal formation.
