These OUTER WILDS earrings are formed from the discarded exoskeletons of cicada larvae, naturally shed as they emerge from the forest floor and ascend into the trees. Hand-collected from the Rocky Mountain forests during summer emergence, each shell is selected intact and preserved in its original form. The delicate structure is carefully reinforced and stabilized to ensure durability while maintaining the fine detail of the segmented body, grasping forelegs, and translucent surface that make cicada shells so visually arresting.
Once secured as stud earrings, the shells appear to cling gently to the lower edge of the ear—an illusion that is at once subtle and striking. Light in weight but rich in texture, they carry the quiet tension of transformation: an artifact of emergence, left behind after flight.
No two cicada shells are identical. Variations in size, posture, and surface pattern remain visible, ensuring that each pair is one of a kind. These earrings are designed for those drawn to natural history, seasonal cycles, and adornment that captures a fleeting biological moment rather than manufacturing an imitation.

Ethical Sourcing & Care
All cicada shells used in these earrings are naturally shed during seasonal emergence and are collected after the insect has fully transitioned to its adult form. No insects are harmed in the making of this jewelry. Each shell is reinforced and sealed to protect its structure. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or high humidity, and store in a dry place when not worn.
